Lou Dobbs is leaving CNN. In his statement he say he feels the need to take a more active role in the important discussions that face our nation.

I always liked Lou. I'll miss being able to watch his show. It'll be interesting to see what form his new desire to be directly involved in these discussions will take.

Campaign adviser.

Think so? The more I think about it the more strange I find it. There are few places he could be more influential than on a 24 hour news network with an hour-long show every night. But as you say, you can't be part of a campaign with that job.

Maybe being influential isn't enough. Participating in a campaign to elect a leader he believes in would certainly seem more "active" than talking into a camera.

Except for the fact that he could indirectly campaign fairly effectively where he was. And there seems something odd (humorous?) about 'Mr. Independent' campaigning for a partisan candidate.

I wasn't really a viewer, so it's hard for me to speculate. It's gotta hurt CNN, though. I'd rather thought he was a boost to their ratings.

Do you think this could have any tie to the the fact that immigration reform is slotted to come up again after the first of the year?

Who says he would stump for a major party? With Congress' approval rating below 20%, now is the time for third parties and Independents to really shine.

He is Mr. Independent.

Think he has plans to run for office himself? Where's he even from?

According to Wiki he's lived all over the place, but currently lives in New Jersey.

I used to watch quite a bit of Dobbs, and generally liked him and agreed w/his viewpoints. Seemed pretty common sense to me. It'd be great if he ran for something in NJ, we need help.

CNN losing Beck and Dobbs w/in a year or so? Altho Dobbs considered a bit more center, I wonder if there's something there as well.

Slightly random...
Didn't someone take a shot at him recently?
Literally? Shot at his house?

Mr. Dobbs was on O'Reilly last night and confirmed that he had received numerous death threats until one evening someone took a shot at his house. He said the threats immediately stopped. So, yes, according to him, someone did shoot at his house while he and his wife were in it.

Just saw this report...

Lou Dobbs Left CNN for $8 Million Good Reasons
CNN wanted veteran newscaster out so badly, they gave him an $8 million settlement package, reports The New York Post.

"They wanted him out," revealed a source. Dobbs shocked fans by announcing he was quitting his show 'Lou Dobbs Tonight' last Wednesday. Another source claimed he had 18 months left on a $12 million contract.

Tension had been building between Dobbs and CNN executive producer Jonathan Klein over the subject matter reported during Dobbs's show - that President Barack Obama was not born in Hawaii and therefore not an American citizen as well as illegal immigration. "What they do is their business," Dobbs stated yesterday regarding CNN. "I tried to accommodate them as best I could, but I've said for many years now that neutrality is not part of my being."

Klein held a strong belief that Dobbs' increasingly opinionated reporting ran counter to CNN's stated goal of becoming a fact-based, opinion-free network nestled between the right-leaning FOX News and left-leaning MSNBC.

However, the extent to which CNN was willing to pay Dobbs such a significant severance had been hidden. This stands in significant contrast to the way Dobbs expressed the professional dissolution of his 27-year association with CNN which he characterized as "pleasant, friendly and professional" to the Atlanta Constitution-Journal.

The $8 million package has given Dobbs a sense of freedom. "I truly believe that it's also a liberating moment for me," claimed Dobbs, who is in no rush to work on another network. Dobbs said that it would be "weeks, probably months" before he decides what to do next.

Speculation that Dobbs may become a candidate for the Senate seat in New Jersey in 2012 rings false to insiders. "He couldn't stand the scrutiny," mentioned a colleague.

I don't think so. However, we need to have choice to truly do good. Why else would there have been a forbidden tree in the garden of Eden. So, we don't need to see evil, we just have to have the option of choosing it.
